At Natural Choices Nurseries we follow the government guidance for safer sleep and take into consideration the
individual needs of the children. We understand that not all children will follow the same routine, and some may
require specific arrangements when going to sleep at nursery.
Cots and Beds
We ensure all children under one sleep in a cot with apnea monitors on and are checked regulary. Any children ages 6 months or younger will be supervised at all times whilst sleeping in a cot.
All of our cots and beds follow the british safety standards BS EN 716-1:2017, BSEN 1466:2014 or
BS EN 1466:2023. Our Cots do not contain extra items such as toys, pillows, extra blankets, bumpers, wedges or straps.
Our Sleep spaces only contain a firm, flat, waterproof mattress and lightweight bedding which is firmly tucked in. Where blankets are used, the child is placed feet-to-foot at the bottom of the cot, with blankets tucked in around the child below their shoulders to prevent head covering. At Natural choice we only use Cellular blankets or sleeping bags provided by parents. All sleeping bags provided by parents will be checked by staff to ensure the correct tog for the season/weather is being used. Staff will use a temperature and clothing guide to ensure they are following the correct guidance and ensuring children are sleeping in a safe environment.
Comforters
As per the safer sleep guidence comforters are only recommended for children over 1 years of age.
Dummy straps are only to be used at supervised times not for sleep times
Sleep Breathing/Movement Monitors
We use sleep sensor breathing monitors on all cots for children under 1 years old.
Our Sleep Environment
We ensure every sleep room has a room thermometer in. We make sure all rooms are between 16-20 degrees. All extra clothing like hoods or lots of layers are removed to ensure children do not over heat and any risk within the room are removed. Camera’s and apnea monitors (cots only) are turned on and all sleep times are recorded on our sleep record sheet.
